Dear Forum Folks, Rankin Family,
Forgive my presumption and familiarity.... Some of you may know me, some of you may not.
I'm Vance Gilbert, Boston based singer songwriter, 9 albums to my credit, I work 100 - 150 dates a year, I toured with George Carlin for 2 years, 2005 - 2007, my music an indescribable mix of jazz, pop, and folk, and I'm an established face on the "folk scene" throughout North America. It's a solid and fruitful career I have. I've imitated and studied many masters at this singer songwriter thing over the years, and I think you all see where this is going...
Occasionally someone will ask me to "do some Kenny Rankin". I'll happily dash through Haven't We Met, scat break and all, or tag a stylized Blackbird on to the end of another tune. One evening during a between show break with George Carlin I ran over a few "Kenny" tunes and he'd get quite a kick out of that. I am thrilled to have these bits of legacy under my hands at recall.
Today I got the news that has shaken me to the core. I really don't know what else to say. He was one of my idols. We met twice and he was immensely kind to me each time. My heart is broken but goes out to all of his family, the music world at large, his legions of fans, and to me.
