carlin was at the top of the ladder of comedy artist, but he appeared as an everyman...he did not do shtick with rimshots.....in society we tend to get hyperbolic and honor those passed with changing the world......carlin's strengths were sublte; he observed, he loved to look at language and suggest its peculiarities and its connotations and its hidden meanings....he also spoke TO people not AT them.....he was not dramatic, but he could be active, moving left to right and back again, as if he were trying to collect as many faces at once and make them one face, to speak to and with......that's a great talent; the use of scatalogical language was interesting, but I'm not sure I think the world is a better place for using btch and fck and mf....often I find the use of those words, esp in adults, as a teenage 'look at what I'm saying' type of exercise.......but getting to the nuance of language is entertaining and instructive.....he was excellent.
