As a matter of fact, I'm not an angry person, but I did feel that his response to a simple
question was as you might put it, uncivil. Nor do I feel that I have disparaged him. That he
was rude doesn't diminish the value of his songs. He didn't owe me a response. He didn't
give me one. Wah. So he's rude, whatever. I imagine he has other redeeming qualities.
I've read many biographies of musicians and I personally find it interesting to hear about
the person behind the music. I'm not talking about trashy gossip. Perhaps their more
pedestrian side in order to glean some insight into their humanity... or their lack thereof.
Now that you got me thinking, I remember that I did see him in concert one other time
about 5 or so years later. Different venue. I took my wife (yes, someone likes me, or has
been feigning) who also enjoys his music very much. It was in Oakland at Yoshi's which is
a jazz club, which implies improvisation. The songlist for the evening was, if not identical,
almost identical to that evening 5 years earlier. The jokes without a doubt WERE. It made
me cringe.
I could write that he farted onstage and through the room wafted the odor of a thousand
roses. That would be inaccurate. He didn't fart onstage, that I was aware of, anyway. I'll
leave the lauding of his gift to mankind to others.
So, Kenny, what was up with your recording dry spell? Not that you owe anything to
anybody. If it's personal, so be it. Was Don Costa a friend of your father's?
