I gave my best friend the gift of Kenny Rankinin in concert for Christmas this year.It was much more like a salon full of friends than a concert, Kenny was warm and wonderful in that his voice is as sweet and full of heart as when I first heard him in the seventies. That guitar fingering is as amazing as ever too. My friend and I will always remember this evening. It was so intimate and pleasureable for us. Its not that the songs evoke a memory of another time either, its not about nostalgia. Some of the selections hes played for years are from before his own time. Its the singing and playing, the being in the moment, swept into the music, and enjoying the sound of the instrument that is Kenny Rankin, the whole package, senuous and sweet. I was particularly hoping to hear When Sonny gets Blue as it was a song my mother sang beautifully in a perfect alto voice when I was growing up and hearing Kenny sing it always makes me cry. But its Christmas so I have plenty of other memories and this night will be amongst them for years to come. Thank you, Kenny.
