On the chance that you're ever looking for original lyrics, I would like to give you these with my compliments. You've said that your best songs were the ones you wrote most quickly. Many years ago, when I was young, this song practically wrote itself. I think it pretty much sums up the life experience.

LIFEBOAT

Can someone show the light of day
to a stowaway?
He hides in a dream on a lifeboat
Pinned under things that he thinks he can’t be
Waits for fate’s opportune moment to set himself free
To let it be known
that lifeboat’s his home

In the corner where he lies
The sunlight finds his eyes
He’s moved by the passengers’ laughing
And loving and crying and trying to be
And while they’re too busy to notice, he finally breaks free
No longer alone
Now lifeboat’s his home

And nobody’s lookin’ out to sea
They don’t give a thought to destiny
With gambles and grab bags and gods they created for free

Not knowing what’s in store
He reaches for an oar
He moves with the current inside him
It takes him some places he’d rather not be
It makes him start wondering if freedom can set the soul free
The wind whispers, “No”
But lifeboat says, “Row.”

And nobody’s lookin’ out to sea
They don’t give a thought to destiny
With gambles and grab bags and gods they created for free
Whee! What a lifeboat!

C’mon enjoy the ride
It makes no sense to hide
With very few rules on a lifeboat
Some even become who they’re livin’ to be
In any event there’s no chance ‘til you set yourself free
There’s no time to crawl
Lifeboat is all
