FrankieDJ,
You are right...it was definitly a night to remember. Here are some of the songs he played, however I can't remember them all. Birembau, Haven't We Met, Round Midnight, Sunday Kind Of Love, Blackbird, Peaceful, Penny Lane, Groovin, Stringman and Silver Morning. Actually, the woman sitting cross aisle from me asked him to play Silver Morning. Kenny was very polite and informed her that he had not performed that song in 25+ years. With a breif pause...he walked over to the organ/piano and said he would try his best...but if it didn't go well he would stop. Well, he got through 25 secconds of the song and was not able to remember the rest. But what a wonderful 25 seconds it was. Tight, precise and as always, his voice was amazing. Well worth the 25 seconds. He then told the woman that he would perform another song from that era which turned out to be Stringman. I would guess that there were another 7 to 10 songs he played besides the ones I listed above. He played for about 90 minutes. Kenny's performance and friendlyness made my 43rd Birthday Weekend a night I will never forget.
>Tim, > Wow! Thanks for the review, it must have been amazing to see Kenny Rankin at the Railhead in Vegas! I've been to that place, not for Kenny but for my favorite funk band Morris Day & The Time, it's a casino frequented by locals but the decor and the retro feel of it is amazing, and the concert venue is top notch! Oh my god, I can't believe he played 'Silver Morning'! I'm really wearing my vinyl of that out now. > I find your list of artists fascinating, Chicago is one of my bands also and I'm glad I saw them at the Stardust now that they are tearing it down. My wife and I are going to see Kenny next month at the Cheney Hall here in Connecticut which is another wonderful, intimate venue and we can't wait! > Do you remember if he did any other old stuff? I've also been checking out some of his newer old stuff like 'Here In My Heart', 'Professional Dreamer' and 'A Song For You', but I keep going back to 'Because Of You', it contains a fabulous reworking of 'Birembau', check that out if you can, I don't know if it's still available but it is a masterpiece! Thanks again for that info. > >FrankieDJ > >At 12:30:33 PST on 01-16-06, Tim wrote: > >>Kenny, >> It was a pleasure to meet you after the Railhead performance in Las Vegas this past weekend, and thanks again for taking the time to take a picture with me and my wife, Dana. Well worth the trip from Phoenix. >> As I wrote in my previous email, I had not seen you perform since the late 70’s or early 80’s in Northern California, and I have to say that you sounded incredible as ever. In the past 2 years I have seen The Allman Brothers, Aerosmith, Godsmack, Stevie Nicks, Metallica, Chicago and you. If I could go back and only pick one of those…without question it would be Kenny Rankin. And for what it’s worth, I thought your set list was excellent as well…including your brief version (but still fantastic) of “Silver Morning”. >> I would also like to say Dana and I enjoyed our elevator conversation with you on the way up to our rooms. After the hug and kiss you gave her, she informed me later that she was not going to wash her cheek…ever! I’ll cut her some slack and give her at least a week or so. We’re looking forward to seeing you perform in the near future, hopefully one of the Southern Cal performances you already have booked. >> >>P.S. Any chance there will be other West Coast performances added to your schedule? >> >>Take Care, >>Tim & Dana Cronen >> > >
